The government of the United Kingdom has called a referendum on the issue whether the UK should remain in the European Union or leave. The referendum will take place on Thursday, 23rd June 2016.
It is to be noted that if the government had wished to leave the European Union, it would not have needed a referendum in order to enable it do do so.
This referendum was called in the hope that the voter will approve its policy of remaining in the European Union and thus prevail over these wishes of large numbers of Conservative members in Parliament.
The government itself has issued a booklet to every household in the country stating:-
“The Government believes that voting to remain in the European Union is the best decision for the UK”
See the Government’s own site: HM Government – EU Referendum .
There are two publicly funded campaign organisations: Vote Leave for those who are campaigning to leave the EU; and Britain Stronger In Europe for those campaigning to remain. Each campaign is funded with £7 million of taxpayers’ money and numbers of Conservative Ministers, Members of Parliament, and supporters have jointed the Vote Leave campaign.
There are also nearly 80 additional campaigning organisations which are privately funded and registered with the Electoral Commission. A majority of these are supporting a Leave vote in the Referendum.
I am 72 years of age. I live in London and I shall vote on 23rd June 2016 for the UK to stay in the European Union.
